EPS expanded polystyrene

This type of polystyrene contains small particles that contain a blowing agent (expanding agent), which is usually propane gas. Expanded polystyrene or Unolith is a thermal insulator. When polystyrene undergoes the expansion process, heat is applied to it; As a result of this process, expanded polystyrene granules are formed in the form of connected cells. This factor causes the volume of polystyrene granules to occupy 40 times more space compared to the normal sample. The final product with very large dimensions is cut in customized dimensions and the form of standard ceiling Unolith panels and finally used in building insulation.

EPS consists of 2% polystyrene and 98% air. The manufacturing process results in a closed-cell structure, but not a closed-cell insulation board (because of the voids that can form between the beads).

XPS extruded polystyrene granule

Extruded polystyrene XPS is obtained by combining ordinary crystal granules with foaming agents during the extrusion process. The product obtained as an extruded polystyrene foam sheet is known as XPS for short. XPS is an insulating board that is widely used in construction and industry, such as building insulation, building floors, and concrete floors. This material can be used in manual models, especially in architecture.

In XPS insulation, unlike other insulations that have very small holes in the insulation, a uniform texture with closed and impermeable cells is formed. As a result, a very low heat transfer coefficient and a very high resistance to the penetration of moisture and the passage of sound and pressure are created. This is the special feature of XPS insulation that distinguishes it from similar insulations. This increases the price of XPS compared to other insulations.

The difference between EPS and XPS polystyrene

EPS has a water vapor diffusion resistance of 30-70, while XPS reaches 250-80. this type of plastic granule is slightly more permeable to air and moisture.
